Introduction
Tekken’s main storyline has always revolved around the Mishimas — a cycle of power struggles and endless betrayals. But beyond that central drama, every fighter in the series carries their own story. Some are dark and tragic, others lighthearted or even absurd, yet all add depth to the Tekken universe. In this blog, we’re stepping away from the Mishima saga to focus on five characters whose stories prove you don’t need to be part of the Mishima feud to matter. These are tales that can motivate you, inspire you, and maybe even make you root for them more than the main characters themselves. Let’s dive in.
Yoshimitsu
A mysterious ninja and the leader of the Manji Clan, Yoshimitsu wields a cursed blade said to thirst for blood. To most, such a weapon belongs in the hands of a villain — but Yoshimitsu uses it for good. His motives are rooted in helping others — stealing from those who gained their wealth through dishonorable means and redistributing it to the poor. His loyalty runs deeper than his blade. When Dr. Bosconovitch once saved Yoshimitsu’s life, the bond they formed became unbreakable. The doctor replaced Yoshimitsu’s wounded arm with a cybernetic one, not just giving him strength, but giving him the chance to keep protecting others. That same compassion drives Yoshimitsu to risk his life for friends, saving Ling Xiaoyu from danger, and even carrying the unconscious Bryan Fury to the doctor’s lab in Tekken 4 in hopes of giving him a second chance.
His kindness toward Bryan turned into tragedy — after being taken to Dr. Bosconovitch’s lab for repairs, Bryan betrayed him and slaughtered several Manji Clan members. Since then, Yoshimitsu has carried a deep desire for revenge against Bryan Fury. Even in Tekken 8, his purpose never wavers. He aids Lidia Sobieska and Eddy Gordo, watching over a memory-lost Heihachi Mishima, ensuring no evil rises unnoticed. Yoshimitsu is a loyal friend, and a living reminder that even in a world ruled by power-hungry fighters, there is still a place for loyalty, mercy, and hope.
King
King began as a street brawling orphan with nothing but his fists. After collapsing wounded outside a monastery, the Marquez priests saved him. He became a Catholic priest and set his life’s mission to build an orphanage. Wrestling was the way to fund it. In the ring, his rivalry with Armor King grew into respect and friendship, and Armor King often stood in his corner. Ogre ended the first King’s life. A boy from the orphanage took the mask as King II. Armor King trained him and gave him the tools to fight for the children, not for glory. Even after Armor King was killed by Craig Marduk, King II kept entering tournaments to keep the orphanage alive and to honor both mentors.
Every match he fought meant food on the table for the children and a roof over their heads. Each opponent he faced brought him closer to securing their future. His strength came from compassion, not pride. When Craig Marduk, the man who killed Armor King, was at his mercy, King chose forgiveness over vengeance and later stood beside him as a partner in the ring. He even stepped in when Armor King II sought revenge against Marduk, knowing the value of life and the pain that endless hatred brings. The legacy of both Kings is one of sacrifice and heart, proving that the truest victories are measured in lives saved and hope restored.
Hwoarang
Hwoarang trained by the legendary Baek Doo San, Hwoarang began as a gang leader and underground fighter in South Korea. Hwoarang grew into a disciplined Taekwondo fighter, always obedient to his master. His life changed when he met Jin Kazama in a street fight that ended in a draw. After Baek was believed to have been killed by Ogre, Hwoarang entered the King of Iron Fist Tournament 3 seeking revenge on Ogre for his master’s fate and to earn a long-awaited rematch with Jin Kazama. In Tekken 4, while serving in the South Korean military, Hwoarang left without permission to enter the King of Iron Fist Tournament for a rematch with Jin. Though he finally faced him, the fight was cut short when Hwoarang was taken into custody by the military.
After completing his service, he entered Tekken 5, where he managed to defeat Jin in the semifinals, only to face the terrifying transformation into Devil Jin. Overpowered and hospitalized, Hwoarang awoke to find Baek at his side, ready to train him once again. Instead of fearing the Devil Gene, Hwoarang used the loss as fuel to push himself even harder. In Tekken 7, he encountered Devil Jin in the Middle East, defeating him, but lost his sight due to interference from the United Nations forces. By Tekken 8, Hwoarang had become both a rival and an unshakable ally, a shadow partner who pushes Jin forward while standing beside him in the fight against greater threats. His journey is one of loyalty, hard work, and fearless determination — a fighter who proves that true strength comes from growing alongside those you challenge.
Ling Xiaoyu
Bright-eyed and full of energy, Ling Xiaoyu is a cheerful martial artist whose youthful spirit hides fierce determination. Trained in Baguazhang and Piguaquan by her distant relative Wang Jinrei, she is rarely seen without her loyal companion Panda, who serves as both bodyguard and closest friend. Her greatest dream has always been to open her own amusement park, a wish that led her to meet Heihachi Mishima in hopes his resources could make it real. Over time, her heart became tied to the Mishima family’s struggles, especially through her deep bond with Jin Kazama.
From the moment she learned of Jin’s tragic destiny, Xiaoyu has fought to protect him, often standing in harm’s way despite overwhelming odds. Across every tournament, she has tried to pull him away from the darkness of the Mishima bloodline. In Tekken 8, her bravery shone once more when she shielded Jin from a deadly Jack assault, proving she would risk everything for those she loves. Lighthearted on the surface but steadfast at her core, Ling Xiaoyu is one of the truest protectors in the Tekken world.
Kuma
Kuma is the most loyal companion to Heihachi Mishima. The first Kuma served as Heihachi’s guardian and pet, but after his passing, Kuma II took his place, carrying on the bond. Kuma’s role grew in Tekken 3 and 4, where he developed a comedic yet fierce rivalry with Paul Phoenix. Despite his strength, his life always revolved around Heihachi. Even when rumors of Heihachi’s death spread in Tekken 5, Kuma mourned and tried to carry on his master’s legacy.
What makes Kuma unique is his loyalty. While the Mishima bloodline is consumed by betrayal and hatred, with Heihachi, Kazuya, and Jin constantly clashing, Kuma remained steadfast. An animal showed the love and loyalty that even Heihachi’s own family could not. In Tekken 6 and 7, Kuma fought to defend Heihachi, proving his devotion. And in Tekken 8, Kuma pays tribute to his fallen master in his intro, waiting for him with unmatched patience and love. Where Heihachi’s own sons despised him, Kuma stood as the only one who truly cared. Kuma’s story is all about loyalty, love, and a bond stronger than blood.
